Feed 5000

Higher Ground Church
Feed The 5,000
Project Summary

In July of 2008, Pastor Steve Jacks preached on the feeding of the
multitudes. After this series, Pastor Steve felt led by God to launch a project
to feed 5,000 needy people in our area on Thanksgiving.
Because this was such a massive undertaking, he tried to negotiate
with God and only feed 500. God told Pastor Steve that he was doing what
the disciples did and he kept the original goal of feeding 5,000.

The members of HGC are excited about this project and share Pastor Steve's
passion for providing a nourishing Thanksgiving meal to those who would
not have one otherwise. A menu was developed of foods that
were non-perishable and would not need refrigeration.
This is to allow us to put the boxes together weeks before Thanksgiving
so they can be distributed and because many of the recipients
may not have refrigerators. Each box will feed a family of five.
The members of HGC will be responsible for purchasing the food and
packing the boxes. This will be completed the last week of October
and we will then transport the boxes to the participating agencies.

We are meeting with several human services agencies in Lancaster County.
These agencies will identify their clients who are in need of a wholesome meal
on Thanksgiving and distribute it to these clients. The Lancaster County
Council on Aging and the Department of Social Services have agreed to
participate and we are in negotiations with the Head Start program,
Christian Services of Lancaster, and Carenet (they provide a free medical clinic).
The former Executive Director of United Way has also agreed to participate.
These agencies all serve the different areas of Lancaster County: Indian Land,
Lancaster Heath Springs, and Kershaw. We have no doubts that members
of Higher Ground Church will deliver the meals to the identified clients in
our home area of Indian Land. This will allow our members to share in the joy
of sharing Thanksgiving with those less fortunate.
